The only thing better than listening to The Flaming Lips, is watching the Flaming Lips.  The psychedelic and fun-loving band is known for delighting audiences with over the top visual and musical experiences. Formed in 1983 by brothers Wayne and Mark Coyne, the band is currently on tour through August of this year, stopping in Denver on their way to perform in Aspen over New Years.   Lead vocalist Wayne Coyne, who's unique style provides creative direction of the band, brings his raspy, dream like vocals to their new highly collaborative album which remixes Beatles songs.  Here are some pictures from their concert!

Center for Visual Art

<><<>><><<>><><<>><><<>>

Peter Yumi spent a year traveling around the country practically homeless, and after pouring water on his computer in frustration, he started creating photo-collages based on photoshop techniques, creating layers with actual photographs instead of digital translucence.  His artwork, in addition to other up and coming Colorado Artists is on display at the MSU Center for Visual Art.   Student curator Madeliene Kattman has put together this eclectic collection of artwork that takes a twist on the collage, entitled  ah· sem· blahj.  Among the other artists showcased in the collection are April Frankenstein, who breathes new life to old landscape photographs she collects from estate sales and flea markets by combining them geometrically with other vintage prints from the 50's and 60's and Meghan Pohlod, a printmaker who's first foray into the paper arts is a dreamy landscape she envisioned as she watched the sunrise on the mountains.  The show is up until January 24, 2014.  Check it out!

Damak to Denver

>>>><<<<<>>>>><<<

Picture.Me.Here is a photography and digital story telling project lead by local photographer Brigid McAuliffe.  Brigid and her team travelled to Damak, Nepal in the spring of 2014 to provide cameras and basic photography training to a small group of Bhutanese refugees.  With the cameras, the refugees were able to document images of the camp they lived in for decades, before moving to the United States to resettle.  The images captured by the refugees are on display at the Colorado Photographic Arts Center.  Here are some pictures of the event!

Economic Activity Study

<<<>>>> <<<>>> <<<>>>

This week is Denver Arts Week. To kick it off, the Colorado Business Committee for the Arts hosted a breakfast last Friday to reveal the results of their biennial study of the economic impact of the arts and culture in the Denver Area.  Both direct spending, which includes operating expenditures, audience spending and capital expenditures, and indirect spending, which is the result of paying arts and cultural professionals is included.  The total impact was calculated to be $1.85 billion dollars!

Highlights from the study included the following facts:
  • 14.2 million people visited cultural institutions in 2013, more than attended sporting events in the metro area
  • Children in the metro Denver area had an average of 8.5 experiences with arts, cultural and scientific groups
  • Up 9.1% from 2011, the total employment in the Arts and Cultural sector was 10,205 in 2013

Denver Pavilions

<><><><<>><><><>

This week I did a project at the Denver Pavilions, in downtown Denver.  I find the design concept behind the space so unique and creative.  They do a great job creating a romantic ambiance, especially at night.  With Halloween festivities and the nice weather, it was fun to be outside walking around.  Here are some pictures!
