This week is Denver Arts Week. To kick it off, the Colorado Business Committee for the Arts hosted a breakfast last Friday to reveal the results of their biennial study of the economic impact of the arts and culture in the Denver Area. Both direct spending, which includes operating expenditures, audience spending and capital expenditures, and indirect spending, which is the result of paying arts and cultural professionals is included. The total impact was calculated to be $1.85 billion dollars!
Highlights from the study included the following facts:
- 14.2 million people visited cultural institutions in 2013, more than attended sporting events in the metro area
- Children in the metro Denver area had an average of 8.5 experiences with arts, cultural and scientific groups
- Up 9.1% from 2011, the total employment in the Arts and Cultural sector was 10,205 in 2013
